Goal:  to recapture the Willimantic River by creating a regional multi-use riverside hub for Windham residents and visitors from across the country. Initial plans call for gaining public access to the riverside, creating an unparalleled oasis for this urban center. Other plans include some restructuring of the riverbed to permit anadromous fish passage and to create whitewater recreational opportunities.

The urban whitewater park and recreation hub will feature a world-class whitewater venue, a riverwalk and community park, observation platforms and other amenities such as a skateboarding park and climbing wall. This recreational hub will connect local and regional hiking and biking trails. Additionally, the park will provide canoes and other floaters of the upper Willimantic River Greenway egress from the river, increase fishing and eco-walks and enhance the access to the river for whitewater enthusiasts.

Description:  The Whitewater Park would become an urban recreational destination. With an 80'drop in 1.5 miles the Willimantic River is potentially a class 4 or 5 kayak run.  With the addition of a Riverside Park, Willimantic will once again be connected to the River with walking paths, benches, play areas, and picnic spots. Walkways will connect the Main Street Historic District to the Train Museum, Windham Textile Museum, the Prospect Hill Historic District and to other points of interest. Future plans include a trans-cultural arts and enterprise zone featuring open air entertainment facilities with display space and an amphitheater for the performing arts.
