The Old Town Canoe Company has a rich and diverse history now spanning a century, and its story is told here in rich and colorful detail, from the earliest wood-and-canvas canoes to today’s sleek polymer models.

Outstanding archival photographs, many never published before, show canoes under construction, canoes underway, canoes being pitched off the factory roof, and everything from log drives to summer camps. Wonderful illustrations and motifs have been selected from a hundred years of Old Town Canoe catalogs, along with stunning canoe photographs, past and present, from private collections, including many from the Gray family, founders of the company.

The acquisition and disposition of the Carleton and E. M. White Canoe Companies and the spin-offs that resulted in the Penobscot Canoe Company and the St. Louis Meramec Boat and Canoe Company are explored in these pages, as well as the companion businesses: the Bickmore Gall Cure and the Gray Hardware Company. We also get an insightful look at the marketing savvy that sold canoes well beyond Maine even in the early years and the advancements since the mid-1970s, when Johnson Diversified (now Johnson Worldwide Associates) took ownership and made Old Town the largest canoe and kayak company in the world today.

This company history is interwoven with narratives and anecdotes that share the excitement and pleasure that can come with canoe ownership, from stories of exploration and adventure to a quiet evening paddle. A bibliography, further reading section, glossary, and technical information such as serial numbers and production charts are provided.

Susan Audette began canoeing as an adult and quickly became an enthusiast. She was a member of the first United States Canoe and Kayak Marathon Team to attend the World Championships (1988), and although her love of the sport includes sleek racing canoes and kayaks, wood-and-canvas canoes remain a favorite. She’s an active member of the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association, as is her co-author, David Baker, who has been canoeing since childhood. Dave collects and restores canoes, has served as historian and librarian of the WCHA, and consults, teaches, and lectures for museums and organizations.-

Addendum: Sadly we report that David Baker passed away in September of 2001. He is sorely missed.
